A Tokyo yuba-wrap sandwich shop gets its first Osaka test run at Hankyu Umeda

Hankyu Umeda is giving Omotesando yuba-wrap sandwich brand yuppa its first Osaka outing, a week-long basement pop-up the department store will use to test whether a buzzy Tokyo food concept can draw a crowd before anything more permanent follows.

Hankyu Umeda is running its first Osaka test of yuppa, an Omotesando yuba-wrap sandwich concept, on its basement food floor from October 21 to 27.

The pop-up occupies Hankyu Umeda Honten's B1 Food Stage and marks yuppa's first appearance at the store, according to Hankyu Hanshin Department Stores' release. The Tokyo brand wraps its fillings in fresh Kyoto yuba (a tofu-skin sheet) rather than bread, positioning itself as a healthy, casual fast food; the release traces the idea to the founder's father, a kaiseki chef, and the brand's stated aim of making a traditionally formal ingredient something people can eat more freely, day to day. Three items are on sale: the signature Original Mazesoba, with cha soba wrapped in yuba (1,101 yen), an Avocado Salmon & Cream Cheese roll (1,250 yen) and a Lemon Chicken roll (1,250 yen). Sales are limited while stock lasts.

The appearance is a small example of a routine Hankyu uses often: a short basement residency to gauge whether a buzzy Tokyo food brand can draw an Osaka crowd before either side commits to anything permanent.
